Delightful surprises of Nature!…
It’s so easy to overlook things in our environment that we get used to seeing. We might see the same species of birds, mammals, trees or plants and not really notice them anymore, since they’re no longer a novelty…
I tend to do that in urban areas, but when I’m out in Nature, I always see things with wonder – as if seeing them for the first time. Even if I’ve seen Chickadees, Oak trees or Squirrels hundreds of times, I still delight in every one I meet.
Having this perspective makes life so interesting and rewarding! We never know when we might discover something completely new…
Seeing this little Boreal Owl in the photo is a perfect example of this…
I just happened to be looking outside the kitchen window when a bird I didn’t recognize flew into my field of view and perched about 20 feet up in a nearby tree… I grabbed my binoculars to see it better and discovered to my delightful surprise that it was a small Boreal Owl – a species I’d never seen before!… I managed to take a few photos through the window before it flew to a new location. It must have been feeling my absolute joy for it looked straight at me!…
According to my field guide, it’s a “scarce and elusive owl of the boreal forest”, so seeing it, and especially in that location, in daylight, was truly such a rare gift! I felt honoured by its presence since owls have always been special to me (it did return a bit later to sleep in lower branches for a while, not seeming to mind me when I went outside).
I invite you to look at your environment with a new perspective and see what you might discover, or rediscover… It’s amazing what might be just waiting for us to notice and experience… ♥
